FOR a player of his age, Rob Davies has had more than his fair share of clubs.

When the 21-year-old midfielder joined Worcester City last month he had already played in the Blue Square Premier, Unibond Premier and the Spanish Third Division since the beginning of last season.

Looking for a club to call home was proving elusive for the Welshman.

He began his career as a teenager with West Bromwich Albion but only made one first-team appearance — as a substitute for Junichi Inamoto in a 3-2 extra-time FA Cup third round replay defeat against Reading at the Madjeski Stadium in 2006.

Then, following a loan spell with Kidderminster Harriers which yielded just four starts, West Brom assistant manager Mark Venus set him up with a trial at Spanish Segunda ‘B’ outfit Barakaldo CF.

However, the language, among other things, was a barrier and Davies soon returned to England to join Hednesford Town, scoring three goals in 10 appearances.

In the summer, Davies signed a deal with Oxford United but found the 200-mile round-trip from his Sutton Coldfield base difficult and ended up leaving.

However, Richard Dryden offered him a chance to resurrect his career at St George’s Lane and he has been an ever-present since making his debut at Bognor Regis in the Setanta Shield.

Davies said: “I am enjoying my football, they are great set of lads and Richard is a great manager.

“I spoke to him in the summer but I was hooked up with Oxford United at the time. I kept in contact with him and kept him informed. When I was released from my contract with Oxford, there was only one place I wanted to come.

“The first thing I noticed was a good team spirit and the lads have taken that onto the pitch.

“The Wimbledon game springs to mind when we were 3-0 up and they were coming back at us but we stuck together.

“You need good team spirit and hopefully we can get promoted.

“We have got some good younger players and experience in the team which is a good mix. I am enjoying my footballl again and Richard Dryden has given me a chance to express myself.”

Davies has provided City with an extra option in midfield and his ability from set-pieces makes him the perfect alternative to left-footed Jamie Price.

Davies said: “At West Brom, I used to take all the free-kicks and corners for the reserves, it’s a good attribute to have.

“I have always practiced from a young age and my dad used to take me across the field to practice.”

Central midfield is Davies’ preferred position but, following such a turbulent career to date, he is just happy to be a first-team regular.

He said: “From a young age, I have always played in central midfield but I don’t mind getting a lot more freedom out wide and contributing from there. But as long as I am playing I am not really bothered — I will play centre-back or in goal if I have to!”

Meanwhile, ex-City midfielder Sam Wedgbury faces a spell on the sidelines after chipping a bone in his leg while on loan at Mansfield Town.
