HAVING destroyed Midlands Four West South leaders Dunlop last week, Upton were unable to build on that success in the second round of the EDF Senior Vase.

Playing against Wolverham-pton, who ply their trade in Midlands Three West North, Upton slumped to a 13-10 defeat.

Wolverhampton have not had the best of starts to the season with only one win.

The hosts were unable to field the same XV that performed so well against Dunlop after fly-half Dan Keyte fell ill and number eight Oli Banwell was injured.

Wolverhampton took an early lead when their backs cut through the Upton midfield allowing their winger to score under the posts for a converted try.

Upton dominated the game from then on throu-gh possession and territory but they could not break down the Wolves strong defence.

The second-half started as the first ended with Upton continually on the attack.

After a number of phases they were awarded a penalty that skipper and stand-in fly-half Chris O’Neil converted to pull the score back to 7-3.

The hosts then made some changes with Mike Dodge coming on at stand-off and Upton immediately took the lead with a try.

Dodge took a quick tap penalty on half way and fast hands from Heeley and Pimlow put winger John Gammond away, in his first game for Upton for some 10 years.

He was tackled five metres short of the line but the ball was recycled quickly and span wide to lock Matt Jeffreys to crash over. O’Neil converted to put Upton 10-7 up.

The home side should have closed the game out from here but continual poor decisions and silly mistakes gave the visitors two kickable penalties in the last 10 minutes which they duly converted.

Upton return to league action this week with an away trip to Kings Norton.
