TWO Worcestershire golfers have returned from Sweden where they took part in the final of one of Europe’s most prestigious competitions for female club players.

Sylvia Andrews and Sally Smith, members of the Vale Golf Club near Pershore, qualified along with five other British pairs for the Rohnisch Masters. The duo enjoyed an all-expenses-paid trip to the final.

The Rohnisch Masters is a golf tournament for all levels of women players, with qualifying rounds throughout Europe.

The event took place in the beautiful surroundings of Omberg, on a golf course next to the second largest lake in Sweden.

On a sunny and very windy day, 92 competitors took to the course for a stableford competition.

Unfortunately, Andrews, who plays off 14, and Smith (11 handicap) did not win, but they did have a memorable time and finished 16th in the Class ‘A’ division.

Andrews said: “We had a fantastic time in Sweden.

“We were disappointed not to have made it into the top 10, but the competition was very enjoyable and the other competitors were very friendly.

“The Rohnisch Masters was extremely well organised and it really was a once in a lifetime trip.”

The pair qualified for the trip by winning a regional competition at The Vale GC in June.

Smith added: “Sylvia and I were thrilled to qualify for the Rohnisch Masters in June as I was a new member of The Vale Golf Club and it was the first time we had played together.

“We had an amazing weekend in Sweden and I would love to go there again.”

Melanie Drake, general manager of The Vale Golf Club said: “Sylvia and Sally did incredibly well to qualify for such a prestigious competition.

“We do hope that other members of the club will be encouraged by their performance and that a few more may take part in the Rohnisch Masters next year.”

The Vale Golf Club boasts both an 18-hole international course and a nine-hole course as well as a driving range, a golf shop and tuition and equipment hire.
