MIDLAND Combination Division One’s two leading teams locked horns in an enthralling Endsleigh Challenge Cup first-round encounter.
Archdales lost 1-0 to Castle Vale JKS at Claines Lane but both teams played fine attacking football to show why they are doing so well.
The game hinged on two decisive moments — one for Dales and the other for JKS. In the first-half, JKS created the first chance with keeper Paul Wyatt saving superbly from skipper Richard Henry.
At the other end, Andy Widdowson had an effort held by Osmond Mulley. Dales were more dominant in terms of chances in the second period but Mulley was unbeatable between the sticks, denying Aaron Mason, Steve Howe and Ashley Banner.
Then a mistake let in Luke Powell, who rifled JKS into the lead.
Within moments, Dales sub Tom Wale was brought down in the box but Widdowson blasted the spot-kick against the bar.
Dales continued to press forward but once more Mulley was the hero, saving an Ashley Banner free-kick and Luke Willetts’ header.
In injury-time, Luke Whittington was sent off for Dales, which was the only dampner on an excellent display in an outstanding match witnessed by a bumper crowd of 347.
