IT has been more than half-a-century since Worcestershire’s New Road ground flooded in September.

However, despite their remaining two home games having to be switched to Kidderminster’s Chester Road ground, the County are still hopeful for big turn-outs.

The Birmingham League Premier Division club can accommodate 2,500 to 3,000 spectators and Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton is expecting a packed ground as fans clamour to see legend Graeme Hick bring down the curtain on his illustrious career.

The County face Middlesex in the NatWest Pro 40 league on Sunday and in the LV County Championship from Wednesday, September 17.

Newton said: “The tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis and we are anticipating a full house for Sunday’s game as the fans will be keen to see one of Graeme’s final innings for the club.

“I think it could be a similar story the following week for the championship game as plenty of die-hard fans will be wanting to come to at least one of the days to see Graeme’s last innings for Worcestershire.”

Regarding the flooding at New Road, Newton added: “The last time the ground flooded in September was 1957.

“The water is receding now — yesterday it had dropped about two feet since it peaked on Sunday and hopefully we won’t have too much more rain now.

“The forecast doesn’t look too good for today and tomorrow but should improve for the weekend.”

Worcestershire were forced to use Kidderminster Victoria’s home ground last season after the River Severn burst its banks.

The County lost more than £1million during the summer of 2007 as no matches could be played at New Road after June 21.

Tickets for both Middlesex games are available by calling 01905-337921 or online at www.wccc.co.uk.

Parking will be available for just members only on the Sunday.
