DANNY McDonnell faces another spell on the sidelines after suffering a badly cut leg at Basingstoke.

The Worcester City goalkeeper was caught late by Town substitute Carl Gibbs in the closing stages of Tuesday’s 0-0 draw, with the player’s studs leaving a deep gash in McDonnell’s lower leg. Gibbs was booked for the challenge but was confronted by angry City players at the final whistle.

McDonnell, who missed the majority of last season with a shoulder injury, was treated by physio Steve Ball but is expected to miss Saturday’s Blue Square South match against Fisher Athletic at St George’s Lane.

Manager Richard Dryden, who is currently without goalkeeping cover after James Lester joined Bognor Regis, said: “It looks like he’s going to be out for a bit. I thought it was a bad tackle. Now we are short of a goalkeeper, and a good one at that.”

City squandered a host of chances to secure victory in the Camrose clash but ultimately had to settle for a point.

“It was a frustrating night,” Dryden said. “We played well and dominated the game from start to finish.

“It was a game we should have got three points out of but it wasn’t for a want of trying.”

City assistant manager Carl Heeley was pleased his side emerged with their second clean sheet in four days following the 2-0 win at Bromley.

He said: “I can’t remember them having a clear chance throughout the game and I think we should have won the game by three or four. But it’s a clean sheet, we were away from home and we’ve got a point so we’re not too despondent.

“We have got four points out of two games and, on another day, we could have won it but we haven’t lost it.

“I think if we had had a three-goal lead at half-time, I don’t think there would have been any complaints but it wasn’t to be. We are happy that we’re looking solid.”

Midfielder Jamie Price pick-ed up his fifth booking of the season for a first-half tackle and will serve a one-match ban starting in two weeks.

Heeley admits it is worrying Price has taken just seven games to accumulate the cautions but says he will learn.

He said: “It’s a concern but he’s a young lad and there’s been a couple for dissent which has been more disappointing.”
