BEN Smith has signed a full-time contract with Worcestershire to remain as a player for the next two seasons and be specialist fielding coach on a year-round basis.
The 36-year-old batsman has followed seamer Matt Mason in taking up a dual role with the New Road side, as exclusively revealed by the Worcester News last week.
Director of cricket Steve Rhodes said: “We are delighted that Ben has agreed to extend his playing contract for a further two years.
“He is the ultimate professional in terms of attitude, work ethic and performance.
“These qualities rub off on other players which means he plays a key role on and off the field.
“While his cricket will remain a priority, we want our younger players to benefit from his skills hence the offer of the post as a specialist fielding coach.”
Former County captain Smith said: “This is an important opportunity as it allows me to continue playing for Worcestershire, which is of paramount importance to me, but also enables me to start developing a future career in cricket.
“Since joining the County in 2002, I have seen the team develop a blend of youth and experience which augurs well for the next few years.
“I really look forward to being an integral part of what we all believe will be great success on the field.”
