DURING his year as captain of Ombersley Golf Club, Trevor Hands helped raise more than £800 for a children’s charity close to his heart.
In 2006, Alfie Walton-Ryder, a lovable 13-month-old boy, tragically died following a battle with leukaemia.
Alfie spent most of his short life in the care of the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
His parents Dionne Walton-Ryder and Anthony Ryder, having seen first hand the work of the hospital staff, decided to set up a fund in Alfie’s name — The Alfie Walton-Ryder Forget Me Not Fund — specifically for research into childhood leukaemia.
A good friend of Alfie’s parents, Hands decided The Alfie Walton-Ryder Forget Me Not Fund would be the charity for his term of office.
Throughout the year, a number of golfing events were organised to raise funds and, with the help of his wife Margaret and daughter Rachel, who ran numerous raffles and exploited the generosity of club members, a total of £864 were raised.
A cheque for the total was presented to Alfie’s parents at Ombersley Golf Club.
