ENGLAND may be in the midst of another wicketkeeping crisis, but Worcestershire’s in-form gloveman Steven Davies is not taking too much notice - yet.
Having blitzed his way to his maiden one-day century at Old Trafford last week, the country’s leading wicketkeeper in terms of first-class dismissals is just trying to focus on what he does for the New Road outfit.
With Tim Ambrose being replaced by Matt Prior for the England one-day series against South Africa later this month, Davies is moving up the pecking order.
But, at 22, time is on his side and, considering the harsh spotlight that always falls on the nation’s gloveman, he may want to take a step back enjoying his impressive form for Worcestershire and let other people talk him up.
His maiden one-day hundred, an unbeaten 103 at Lancashire Lightning, came as the County recorded their first Pro40 victory of the season.
Coming off just 83 balls and as impressive as that is, it was the way Davies went about his innings.
He was self-assured, showed plenty of confidence and has probably got the selectors sitting up and taking note once again.
“I’m not really thinking about it,” Davies said when asked about playing for England.
“I try to forget about it. Fingers crossed, though, one day I will.”
Davies was set to tour with the England Lions in the winter, however, the Bromsgrove-born gloveman needed a minor knee operation, which forced him to withdraw.
But, on the form that the youngster is showing once again, and with a former England wicketkeeper in Steve Rhodes guiding his career at New Road, it won’t be too long before that call comes again.
