HAVING already played under the Experiemental Law Variations (ELVs) for Queensland Reds in last year’s Super 14, Chris Latham is well placed to comment on them.

After being introduced in the southern hemisphere, the controversial ELVs are being trialled in the Guinness Premiership this season and the Warriors’ Australian full-back is convinced they will be a hit.

Furthermore, the former Wallaby international believes the ELVs will suit Worcester’s style of play and help Mike Ruddock’s men to play an even more expansive game.

The 78-Test veteran said: “Playing under the ELVs in Australia has been fantastic and they are something I really encourage.

“People won’t even have to be patient with them — they’ll see the massive difference they make to the game in the first five minutes. The speed of the game is so much quicker and the ball is in play a lot faster.

“Although you hear a lot of negative things being said about them over here I think, looking at some of the talent we have here at Worcester and knowing some of the guys, it will benefit us.

“It should suit the game over here even better than it suited us in Australia. I honestly think the supporters will only see positive things with them.”

Latham’s move to Sixways is a jump into the unkown for the 32-year-old three-quarter, but he is relishing the challenge of playing in a new league.

He added: “I’ve not seen a hell of a lot of Guinness Premiership rugby.

“We heard a lot about it, but because we were caught up in the Super14 and the Wallaby Test series, there wasn’t too much time to focus on anything else.

“I guess for me that is the exciting part — I don’t know much about it and I don’t come with much expectation.

“All the teams we play will be new to me, so it’s all about getting out there and getting a win first up against Northampton.

“I’ve been playing for 10 years professionally and I have a burning desire to teach younger guys how to play and pass on a little bit of my knowledge. Hopefully the likes of Chris Pennell and the other guys in the club’s great academy system can fit in nicely with what I’m about and what I enjoy doing.”
