ASHLEY Bosworth’s second consecutive win came when his Barbourne Angling Club visited the High Pool at Woodland View fishery.
Drawn on permanent peg 29, Bosworth’s excellent season continued when, despite losing several good fish, he took 51-14-0 of carp to the scales by offering pellet bait just three metres out from the bank.
Less than a pound separated the next three anglers, with Bob Griffiths (44-4-0) securing the runner-up prize caught on pellet and meat from close in on peg 13. Terry Box ended just an ounce behind with 44-3-0, which came off bonus peg 25, while club star Pete Hughes was fourth with a weight of 43-6-0 from peg 15.
This weekend, Barbourne AC are at Willow Marsh fishery.
Arbo AC had to hastily re-arrange their match to the BAA stretch of the Severn at Ribbesford and, despite the river carrying extra colour, catches were disappointing.
Top rod on the day was Ade Wilkes with one small barbel along with a few perch and chublets taken on the feeder going 2-13-8.
Stuart Gormley took second place with 2-12-0 of silvers on the block end feeder, Phil Bennett finished just an ounce behind with 2-11-0 and, in fourth, came river expert Acko Staite with just 1-12-8 of bleak.
Sunday’s match on the Elgar Pool at Broadheath should produce better weights.
Portobello’s Steve Dobbs decided a change from the accepted pellet and paste approach was needed to win his club’s annual contest on Brockamin bottom pool, a decision which proved inspirational with the angler taking 84-6-0 of big carp to the scales to prove his point.
Adopting an unusual match fishing approach of a method waggler in conjunction with mini boilies on the hook produced fish to double figures for Dobb’s, who was drawn on dam wall peg 22.
His nearest rival was Pete Coldrick at the opposite end of the pool on peg 40. Coldrick stuck to pellet and paste in order to net nine carp for a 55-12-0 runner-up total.
There was a tie for third spot between Graham Collins and Chris Elderidge — both anglers taking 41-8-0 to the scales. Collins ignored his favourite macaroni bait in favour of paste on peg 39, while Elderidge did the same on peg 35.
Top junior once again was Gary Brixton jnr with 19-6-0, while the prize for the biggest fish went to Mick Weston, who used stout pole tackle to land an 18 pound specimen.
Last Wednesday’s Cob House open, held on the prolific Laugherne Island Pool, saw local rod Mick Turberfield record his first win of the series with an all small carp net, taken on pellet from peg 36 weighing 86-6-0.
Runner-up prize went to Mick Hendry with a similar catch going 84-13-0. Making a rare appearance on the leader board was third-placed Nigel Hobday, who recorded 80-10-0 to beat Richard Brewer’s 68-8-0 catch.
The Plough AC held a two-hour evening open on their pool at Broadheath with clubman Anthony Staite finally winning his first match.
Offering paste close in on peg four, Staite took a winning 28-8-0 all-carp net. Second place went to Dave Warren on peg 27 with 22-4-0 and Mike Hope was third, weighing a pellet-caught 17-8-0.
