WORCESTER CITY WOMEN return to action this Sunday (December 8) in league action against Peterborough United.

The side have enjoyed a weekend off since their last fixture - where they were knocked out of the Adobe Women's FA Cup by a strong, higher-division West Bromwich Albion side.

City lost 6-0 to West Brom, but put in a valiant effort, and equalised their deepest ever run in the FA Cup.

Speaking after the game, manager Matt Jones commended the side, saying: "First of all, I just say how proud I am of the players. I believe the second time in the club’s history, getting to the second round proper of the women’s FA Cup – that is a remarkable achievement.

"When we consider where the club has come from, and where we are trying to get to. It is obviously disappointing after getting knocked out, especially after losing 6-0 but I think the score line tells the story of maybe the gulf in ability and we accept that we are where we are. We are working tirelessly to make sure we are challenging ourselves to get better."

Despite a disappointing result in the cup, in the match prior, City recorded their best league result of the campaign thus far.

A confident side saw off Lincoln City by four goals to nil, to move out of the relegation zone.

A tough challenge awaits for City this Sunday however, as they take off a third-placed Peterborough United side in top form.

With only two losses so far this season, the side were undefeated in the league until mid-November, however City can take some confidence from the fact that Peterborough's two losses have come in their last two league fixtures.

This will be the third meeting of the two sides this year, having met in the National League Midlands Division One opener, and in the FA Women's National League Cup.

The season opener saw City lose 4-1 in the first game the club had ever played at this level.

A consolation goal from captain - Jess Fassnidge - was not enough to get a result against the high-flying side.

In cup competition, City were met with a similar result. A 3-0 loss saw Worcester exit in the first round of the competition.

Worcester City will look to take advantage of Peterborough's turn in form this Sunday (December 8), which has seen them winless in their last four in all competitions.

As they continue their battle for safety in the fourth-tier of women's football, hopefully it will be a case of third time lucky for Worcester City.
