WORCESTER CITY WOMEN lost 5-2 to Barnsley Women in a tough game which saw an impressive double from Annie Highway.
It was a game where City fell behind, before bringing Barnsley back inside touching distance. The comeback was ultimately put to bed with Barnsley's stoppage-time goal.
Worcester players were forced to take shifts in net throughout, however City still enjoyed a decent showing.
Worcester started the game strongly, dominating the possession in the opening fifteen minutes. Barnsley's keeper was called-on on numerous occasions, with Highway getting two strong shots off from outside the box.
Barnsley would grow into the game from this point on. As momentum began to shift their way, they took the lead. Jodie Snelson found a way through the City defence, before slotting it past Jess Fassnidge.
Barnsley nearly doubled their lead soon after, however a strong save from Fassnidge denied them the opportunity.
In the latter stages of the first half, Barnsley were able to double their lead. Laura Bartup went on a winding run from the left, making it past two defenders, and then finishing in the corner.
As the half drew to a close, City hit the bar. Sophie Griffiths was played through by Highway, finding space and sending in a cross that moved goalwards, and looked to beat the keeper, before hitting the bar.
Barnsley would add one more before the half time whistle with a well worked set-piece routine. A short pass from the corner, followed by a cross into the box saw Snelson win the header and finish into the corner of the goal.
As the teams came out for the second half, Barnsley would continue the strong showing they began in the first. They grabbed their fourth, reacting quickest and turning in a rebound after an initial save from Fassnidge.
Worcester would get one back, courtesy of Highway, who beat the keeper with a fantastic effort from distance.
After getting one back, Worcester looked a revitalised side. A foul on the left wing saw Worcester win a free kick, which Highway curled in.
The comeback seemed to be on for Worcester and the final minutes of the match saw numerous chances for a City side hunting to draw level.
However, in stoppage time, Barnsley would break through once more. Their striker found herself alone in space, scoring the final goal and putting the game to bed.
Worcester City Women are next in action, away against Lincoln City, next Sunday (November 17).
