CHRIS CORNES has praised his team for their heart and desire, following a tough-fought win on the road at Wellingborough.
In a back-and-forth game, City ran out deserved winners thanks to a corner goal from Dylan Hart in the 79th minute.
City were then able to hold strong until the end, under strong pressure from Wellingborough.
"We put our bodies on the line again," said Cornes, speaking after the game. "We’ve gone and scored six, eight minutes from the end but there was eight or nine minutes added on as well. But the lads have stood firm and Haydn [Whitcombe] has come and took a few.
"We’ve managed the game really, really well which we haven’t done in previous games at times. To travel two and a half hours on a Tuesday night when you’ve been at work all day, it’s a testament to the boys and what they’ve got. What they’ve got in abundance is they’ve got bottle, they’ve got desire and they’ve got heart."
Haydn Whitcombe was a standout performer in the game making multiple strong saves to keep his clean sheet intact.
"He's absolutely fantastic," said Cornes. "The back four as well I thought were very, very good today. We lacked some quality going forward from the fullbacks, but I thought [the back four] put bodies on the line, they made tackles.
"We stood firm and got a clean sheet. A one-nil win, you would take a lot of those in a season because it shows what you’re about."
City had significant home support for an away game on a Tuesday night, with the WCFC scarves clear to see throughout the stands.
"40 or 50 travelled up here tonight from work. They've paid their money to get in, it's cost them fuel to get in here so a massive, massive thank you to them as well," said Cornes.
City's next game is away against Coventry Sphinx on Saturday (November 9). It provides Worcester the opportunity for their fourth win on the bounce.
Cornes said: "We will go into Saturday full of confidence and hopefully the lads can keep running through brick walls for me."
