WORCESTER CITY were able to pick up three points on the road against a tough Wellingborough Town side.
City started on the front foot. Almost taking the lead straight away. Guinan broke free down the right and squared the ball to Townsend who was waiting in the box. Unfortunately, Townsend's ball sailed just over the bar.
After the chance, the game largely settled down. Worcester remained the pushing force, however, they were unable to make it count.
Despite this, it was Wellingborough who had the next real chance of the game. They received a free kick outside the area, which their player sent towards the top left corner. Luckily for City, Haydn Whitcombe was able to maintain his brilliant form seen in the last game, and tip it wide.
The majority of the half saw few shots on goal from either side. Worcester remained the dominant team, with much of the possession being in the Wellingborough half. Guinan and Townsend both found their way through on occasions, but neither were able to put Worcester ahead.
As the half time whistle drew nearer, both sides seemed to step it up a notch. Whitcombe was called on, producing another moment of magic to deflect the ball from a one-on-one situation. Townsend also had a good opportunity down the other end - forcing the Wellingborough keeper to make a strong save of his own.
Soon into the second half, the Wellingborough keeper, North, went down injured and was unable to carry on. The home side were forced to have an outfielder don the gloves for the remainder of the game.
Much of the second half mirrored the first, with good chances for both teams in a back-and-forth match, but neither side able to capitalise on the opportunities they created.
The game remained the same for the first period of the second half, until Worcester were able to break the duck from a corner. The ball was whipped in, there was an initial struggle in the box as both sides tried to get a hold of it, before Dylan Hart was able to turn it in.
City were able to dig in. Holding strong in a hard-fought battle to maintain their lead until the end.
Worcester ultimately ran out 1-0 winners in a deserved, but tough game. Chris Cornes' men can be happy with three points on the road.
City are next in action on Saturday (November 9) away at Coventry Sphinx.
