CAITLYN WISE has been named a world champion, after winning in the final of the U19 World Boxing Championships on Saturday (November 2).
Wise, who hails from Ronkswood and trains at Worcester City boxing club, won in dominant fashion over India’s Supriya Devi Thokchom - winning by unanimous decision in the final.
Wise was particularly strong in the final round, ensuring the bout was won and being named the superior fighter on every judges' scorecard.
She was able to utilise her superior height and reach to keep her opponent at distance, while hitting Devi Thokchom with her signature straight shots to the head.
She previously triumphed over Brazil's Leticia Eluterio De Brito via split decision in the semi final, and The United States' Violet Lopez in the quarter final, also winning through split decision.
The competition brought together 180 different boxers from 30 different national federations and five different continents to compete at the Pueblo Convention Centre in Colorado. There were 20 different weight divisions in which the boxers competed, with the men's categories ranging from Flyweight to Super Heavyweight, and the women's categories ranging from Light Flyweight to Heavyweight.
Wise competed in the Women's bantamweight (U54kg) category of the competition.
Wise's win was one of eight titles won by the England Boxing team, topping the gold medal standings, and doubling second-place India's four gold medals.
The world title adds another medal to Wise's long list of accolades. She has won the Midlands Championships three times, the National Championships three times, and she is a three time international champion - winning tournaments in Sweden, Ireland and Germany.
Wise was also named the Women's Winter Box Champion for 2023, alongside winning a junior European bronze medal and becoming the British Champion in the Tri Nations earlier this year.
Wise has previously said that following this title, her next goal is to gain selection to the British Boxing squad, in order to represent her country at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
