A promising young racing driver from Worcester has a healthy lead heading into the final round of a European series this weekend.

Haydn Chance is in pole position to secure victory in the 2024 Ligier European Championship, which concludes at the Portimão circuit on Friday and Saturday (October 17-18).

Chance has maintained a steady lead throughout the season, with a particularly strong performance in Mugello where he claimed two second-place finishes.

This has kept him 25 points ahead of his closest competitor, Ian Aguilera.

Chance has consistently finished in the top two this season and needs to continue this form at Portimão to win the championship in his first attempt.

The point system awards 25 points for a win and 18 for second place.

If Chance wins the first race, he will take the championship.

However, if Aguilera wins and Chance comes second, Chance will need to score eight more points than his rival in the final race to secure the title.

Chance currently has the better ratio of first and second place finishes this season of the rivals.

Chance, of Team Virage, said: "It's the last two races of the season.

"I want to make them count and bring the car home as high as possible, but ahead of my nearest rival.

"With a 25-point lead, there's some comfort and less pressure with that gap.

"But it's not won yet—we'll keep working as hard as we have all year to seal the win and bring the title home."

The weekend begins with the first practice at 9am on Thursday, followed by a second practice at 1.50pm.

Qualifying is scheduled for 5pm and 5.20pm on the same day.

Friday will see two races, the first at 9am and the second at 1.30pm.

Fans can follow the action on the championship's social networks.
