Worcester showed some grit as 42-year-old Oliver Horton's late game-winner saw them overcome Bromsgrove 24-22.

A brace from Rhys Morris, as well as scores from Harvey Causer and the aforementioned Horton got the hosts over the line at Westons Fields against a visiting side packed with fringe first team players.

Due to some injury issues in the front row first-team newcomer Marcus Bath was called up from the Colts to the bench, and veterans Alex Peel and James Swain returned from retirement at the last minute.

The hosts seized control early, but nonetheless lost both Jack Lyman to a suspected head injury and Alex Peel with a hurt calf.

A 20-point wind was also against Worcester, defending on the back foot for much of the first half.

Despite the adversity, the team defended tirelessly, fighting to keep the game within reach at 12-5 at the half time whistle with the aim of exploiting the wind after the interval.

Two quality five-pointers from Bromsgrove saw them surge ahead twice, but Worcester remained resolute, fighting back each time before winning a penalty in the visitor's half.

Rather than opt for the posts, Worcester gunned for the win, executing a lineout that saw Horton, the oldest player on the pitch, drive over for the winner.

Captain Harry Linney said: "As always, facing a Bromsgrove team meant a physical, fast-paced match that went down to the wire.

"The lads put in a massive defensive effort from the first minute, even against the wind, which gave us the confidence to push for the win in the second half.

"Thankfully, we were on the right side of a tight match and clinched the victory with a try in the final minutes."

He added: "It’s another bonus-point win, putting us in the top three, and we’re already gearing up for another tough game on Saturday.

"Super proud of all the lads who played."

The game's man of the match honour was awarded to hooker Ellis Jenkins
