Droitwich Spa and Abingdon United fought to a stalemate in a top-of-the-table clash at Northcourt Road.

Despite Lucas Edmonds giving league leaders Spa the lead, the visitors had to settle for a point following Nathan Binner's red card and a controversial Joe Green equaliser for second-place United.

During the first half of the game, the Saltmen were clearly in the driving seat.

Charlie Tilley led the attack early, forcing goalkeeper Eddie Cavanagh into a shrewd low save to turn the ball around the post.

Spa kept piling on the pressure, with Edmonds taking on three players on his way to the penalty area, where he coolly finished past Cavanagh for the lead.

Shortly afterwards Tilley was denied the chance to double the lead by Cavanagh again.

The momentum shifted when Binner received a red card as he slid in for a dangerous challenge, much to the disapproval of the 50 or so Spa faithful.

Despite the numerical advantage, United could not capitalize before the break.

The second half belonged to Abingdon, with Spa playing a defensive game with plans on hitting on the counterattack.

This tactical shift saw new signing Kyonn Evans set up Edmonds for a powerful shot that was tipped over the bar by Cavanagh.

The pressure from United resulted in multiple opportunities, with the most notable being a cross-shot by Josh Jones that struck the cross-bar.

United's Casey Highmoor forced stopper Dom Rogerson into making a save with a poweerful strike on the 65-minute mark.

The hosts were also reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute due to a challenge from Yellows captain Harvey Sandford drawing a second yellow card.

The Spa backline held firm, but the real drama came deep into injury time, when Green appeared to have dislodged the ball from Rogerson’s safe hands into the goal.

This prompted the referee to consult his linesmen and award the goal, which saw an outbreak of celebration from the hosts and sheer bewilderment among the visitors.

The controversial conclusion saw the game finish level, with the points shared.

Following the match, Abingdon slipped to third in the table, still with a game in hand, but will not play a competitive game on Saturday (September 21) due to the Isuzu FA Vase.

Meanwhile, Redditch Borough moved into the second spot after a victory at Cheltenham Saracens, leaving them five points behind the Saltmen.

The following Saturday will see Droitwich in Isuzu FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round action as they visit Bewdley Town at 3pm.
