Over a thousand young athletes have competed at a county-wide summer games.

The Worcestershire Summer Games saw over 1,300 pupils from various schools across the county gather at Bromsgrove School for a day packed with sports and activities on Wednesday (July 3).

The event was arranged by Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire and school games organisers, and funded by National Lottery and Sport England.

Since 2012, the organisation has been organising School Games events across the two counties, hoping to foster a lifelong passion for physical activity amongst the younger generation.

A total of 1,259 participants aged between four and 16 competed in seven different sports and 14 competitions, with the support of 121 young leaders and volunteers from 71 schools.

The participants had a go at an array of sports, such as aqua splash, dodgeball, boccia, tri golf, rounders, tennis skills and dance.

11 activities were held at the Central School Games Village, ranging from cycling on a smoothie bike to functional fitness.

Chief executive officer at Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Stephen Brewster, said: "We understand the importance of creating positive experiences for our young people to ensure a lifelong habit of physical activity.

"The Worcestershire Summer Games are truly a spectacle, and a wonderfully opportunity for young people across the country to try new forms of physical activity in a fun setting.

"To be able to bring an event of this scale to the county is incredibly rewarding, so I would like to thank everyone involved for making this year’s event a huge success."

Worcester-based AJB Sports in Education returned as the sponsor of the games, after introducing new value awards that celebrated the core values of the games: self-belief, passion, determination, teamwork, honesty and respect.

These were presented to the primary school teams who best demonstrated the school games values in their sports.

Among the winners were Chadgrove School for great determination, Finstall First School for strong self-belief, Birchensale Middle School & Hanley Swan Primary School for all-round sporting behaviour, Vale of Evesham School & Droitwich Spa High School for passion and St Mary's CofE Primary School for exceptional teamwork.
