TEARS of joy and sadness swept through the University of Worcester Arena last night (Friday) as Severn Stars played their final-ever home game.

On an emotional night for the Stars fans, their players gave them one last home memory to cherish with a 72-57 win against Team Bath.

The Stars got off to a slow start as Team Bath ended the first quarter with a 19-13 lead.

But the final night nerves soon wore off as Stars, inspired by a hugely supportive packed-out crowd, fought back and went into halftime with a 36-33 lead.

This win comes just over a week after shocked players and fans found out the club had been chopped from next season's Netball Super League.

But days later, the current crop of Stars secured the club's first semi-final appearance since they were formed in 2016.

Stars goal shooter Sigi Burger told the Worcester News the Team Bath game was a lovely evening which summed up what makes the club so special.

She added: "Fans were in tears and at the end, I was in floods as well, but after we found out about the club being taken out of the Super League we decided to unite, stick together and avoid all the sadness.

"We have left a legacy with what we have achieved with the Stars this season, the fact we could park all the emotions and get to a semi-final has meant so much to all of us."

That semi-final, after one final away trip to Loughborough Lightning, looks likely to be against Manchester Thunder on Saturday, June 22.

Miss Burger added: "For us, we want to take the cup and we can.

"All the other teams are expected to win a title whereas for us it's our first time being here, we have no pressure so can just have fun, but even so we are hungry to win.

"If we play good, clinical netball we have the ability to win, but if we don't it's not the end of the world so that gives us the freedom to enjoy ourselves."
