Worcestershire have announced the special way they will honour young spin bowler Josh Baker following his passing.

His teammates at the Pears will display his number 33 on their shirts for the remainder of the season, in a touching tribute to the talented 20-year-old, who passed away last week (Thursday, May 2).

News of Baker's death was announced by the club, where he had been a player since his professional debut in 2021.

Just a day prior to his passing, Baker, who was a former Malvern College pupil, had been in action for his county's second team, claiming three wickets.

The club's CEO, Ashley Giles, said: "It is clear from the outpouring of love we’ve seen, following last week’s awful news, that Josh touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

"Wearing Josh’s number on their shirts is a way for the team, and all involved with Worcestershire cricket, to pay tribute to his memory and keep his spirit alive on the field."

Giles added: "Josh’s Mum and Dad, Lisa and Paul, have asked us to thank everyone for the hundreds of messages of love and support that they have received since Josh’s passing.

“As we all continue to navigate through this very difficult time, we encourage our members, supporters, and the cricketing community to join us in honouring Josh’s memory and celebrate the life of a remarkable young man who will forever hold a special place in our hearts.”

Baker's former team, Astwood Bank Cricket Club, who he had played for as a youth, also expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt tribute following his passing.

Their statement read: "It is with deepest regret that we share the heartbreaking news of the death of Josh Baker.

"The sense of loss is echoed at all levels at the Club, mirroring the impact and contribution he and his family have made to the very core of our community.

"For many years we have been thrilled and privileged to see him achieve his cricketing dreams, which makes his passing even more tragic.

"At this unimaginably painful time please join us in sharing our deepest condolences with the Baker family & friends."
