A BOXING show delivered a knockout blow for the city, giving some talented young fighters their first taste of fighting in front of a home crowd.
Worcester City Amateur Boxing Club has now forged a link with Archdales Club in Blackpole in Worcester after struggling to put on a home show for seven years, due to funding, Covid and venue issues.
The club, which still trains fighters at its Vincent Road base in Worcester, put on a show at Archdales on Sunday, April 21 with competitive three-round bouts (senior, junior and school level), seating around 200 people.
There were tactical fights and good old fashioned tear-ups to entertain the crowds as the city's finest fighters went toe-to-toe with boxers from across the region.
The club received support from boxing coach and Warndon's Conservative councillor, Owen Cleary, who helped find them a place where their young fighters could showcase their talents.
He has thanked Archdales for backing the club and making the plan a reality.
He set out to try and find a home for the club's shows as club leaders said some experienced boxers - one with 42 bouts under his belt - had never boxed in front of a home crowd.
The Worcester fighters to lace up the gloves were were N Lawrence, T Lawrence, Talia Koudaza, Jay Powell, Jayden Bryce, Tristan Jones, Matthew Hamblett, Tyler Bryce, Will Bagley, Shannon Taylor, Connor Seery and Patrick Morgan.
Head coach Mick Underwood: "I am extremely proud of the boxers from our club and visiting clubs for such a great show.

"We saw eight wins from our 12 contests. All fights were competitive. Even the losses were very close, with fighters who made their debut gaining invaluable experience. A big thank you is owed to our sponsor Blackpole Recycling whose generosity helped us to fund the show."
Coach and Warndon Councillor Owen Cleary said: "In front of a crowd of about 200, we had a great show and the club made a healthy profit. We are grateful to everyone who supported Worcester's boxers, especially Archdales club for the excellent venue, the officials, and friends and family who helped us run the show. We hope to stage another show in the Autumn. Watch this space."
The club has already produced a number of great fighters, including 16-year-old Caitlyn Wise, now the Junior 54kg England Boxing Winter Box Cup Champion.
The club also boasts Midlands area champions and former national champions, proving that Worcester has always boxed well above its weight.
