WORCESTER City moved back to the top of the Hellenic League Premier following a thumping 6-0 win over strugglers Lydney Town at Claines Lane on Saturday.
City's big victory, coupled with Corsham Town drawing 0-0 at Fairford Town, saw them jump above The Quarrymen and into first place on goal difference, still with four games in hand as they edge closer to promotion.
It was always going to be a tough afternoon for a young Lydney side who had lost 20 of their 27 matches coming into the fixture with title-favourites City, and so it proved as Chris Cornes' men romped to a comprehensive win.
It started with a ninth-minute own-goal as Liam Lockett and Elliot Hartley combined to eventually see the ball find the back of the net via a couple of failed clearance attempts on the line.
Kyle Belmonte quickly made it two a couple of minutes later, sweeping home following another Lockett attack down the left-hand side.
Lydney did manage to slow City down for the majority of the first-half but chances kept coming for the home side and only a couple of brilliant stops from Lydney's keeper Rich Thomas kept the visitors in it before two goals in three minutes at the end of the half ultimately settled the contest.
The impressive Hartley continued his fine goal-scoring form when flicking home a low Logan Stoddart cross at the front post and Lockett, having had numerous chances to score, finally got on the score sheet with a fourth.
With the points safe, City continued to search for more goals and only the brilliant Thomas kept the hosts from reaching double figures.
He made a terrific double save to deny Hartley and then Jamie Insall somehow fired wide from a couple of yards.
But City did find a fifth just before the hour as Belmonte nodded past Thomas from a Hartley cross and five became six when Insall bundled home to, deservedly, add another to his season tally.
Whilst City were firing six past Lydney, Corsham were held to a goalless draw by Fairford, meaning Worcester went back top the top of the table on a thoroughly successful afternoon.
