WORCESTER City manager Chris Cornes has highlighted the togetherness in the squad as a major reason behind their success this season after Wednesday's night 2-0 Hellenic League Premier win at Highworth Town.

City cruised back to the top of the table thanks to first-half goals from Izak Reid and Jamie Insall, putting City two points clear with still three games in remaining over second-placed Corsham Town.

And the boss, who was full of praise for his side's performance, has highlighted the closeness of his squad off the pitch as a major influence on results on it.

"The lads have been brilliant with each other," he said. "We went out for an Indian on Thursday and there was 26/27 players there and you do not get that very often at this level. And then we had a night out on Saturday and there is 22, it's just rarely what you get.

"I have been involved in a lot of teams, both playing and in management, and you don’t get that everywhere you go. In the dressing room, the lads are agreeing that it’s such a good, together bunch and that is what wins you games, the lads have been fantastic.

"All of these games, midweek, weekends, they keep performing, they have been brilliant and tonight (Wednesday) is another one ticked off."

Whilst Wednesday evening's win was not always the prettiest, there was no lack of hunger from City, who were a class above Highworth throughout the 90 minutes on a difficult, sloping pitch.

Cornes was keen to pick out striker Insall for particular praise following another goal for the number nine leading the line.

"Insall worked his socks off," added Cornes. "He won the ball and pressed the defenders and that galvanized us and he went and got the second goal to put us in control.

"He (Insall) has been phenomenal in the last five or six games and he's got a few goals in the last couple of games. We said the goals would come and they are now and that is from his work rate, it lifts everyone and he was brilliant.

"Cam (Monteith) came on and picked the baton up from Connor Gater (who went off injured in the first-half), the back four were great, I thought Kirk Layton was monumental at the back again but it was all in all a really good performance."
