THREE fighters from Worcester ABC (Amateur Boxing Club) were crowned Midlands champions as part of the National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs Championships.
In the regional stage of the prestigious competition, three out of the four Worcester City boxers had a straight final of the Midlands area last weekend.
On Sunday, Jay Powell competed in his first National championship since he started boxing.
Powell boxed a fighter from Eastside ABC and throughout the fight he showed his fitness and boxing ability, moving in and out on his toes and landing clear straight shots on his opponent before winning by unanimous decision.
Last season's National Champion Jayden Bryce faced T Doherty in a frustrating bout.
Both boxers struggled to create any sort of rhythm but it was the Worcester fighter who caught the eye of the judges, winning via split decision.
Last up was Ryan Jones who faced L Harper from Bulkington ABC.
Harper was a lot taller than Jones but this did not faze the Worcester boxer and from the first bell, he forced the pace with relentless attacks, pushing Harper to the ropes.
Jones then landed a beautiful rear hand in the third round to force the referee to give Harper a standing eight count. The judges gave Jones the nod with a unanimous decision.
Unlike the others, Tyler Bryce had to box in the quarter-final of his weight category on Friday (27th October) evening.
Bryce put on a solid performance using his boxing ability and strength which saw him a clear winner and through to the semi-finals the following day (Saturday 28th October), where he faced Kumar from Cleary's ABC.
The Worcester boxer again used everything in his arsenal to force Kumar around the ring, answering everything that his opponent threw at him and countered back with more.
But unfortunately for him, it wasn't quite enough for the judges and awarded Kumar the win by split decision.
Head coach Mick Underwood was extremely proud of all the boxers and he said: "We had a disappointing decision go against Tyler on the Saturday but it's boxing. Tyler is a hard worker in the gym and never shies away from any bout he was very unlucky.
"As for the 3 lads in the final I'm a happy coach, 3 Midland champions and now look forward to the next round."
