A Worcester-based mixed martial artist has claimed a sought-after amateur title.
Shay Ingram earnt a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Christian Soda, claiming the FCC Amateur Lightweight Title at FCC (Full Contact Contender) 35.
Ingram trains out of Team Renegade, a Birmingham based-gym that is home to UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.
Although still a young amateur prospect, Ingram’s performance at FCC35, which was held at the Liverpool Olympia, was no different to that of an experienced professional.
Ingram was asked what he could have improved on in his post-fight interview.
“I want to improve on everything,” he said. “That was me at 60%, I could still be 40% better. I’m a mixed martial artist, I’m always trying to be better than my last fight.”
The five-round title fight started off an even match-up, with both fighters finding success whilst striking, and closely-matched when engaging in the fence grappling.
However, as the fight reached the latter rounds the cardio and conditioning of the Birmingham-based fighter began to outshine his opponent.
The Worcester fighter achieved multiple submission attempts, as well as a huge head kick knockdown later in the fight. This left little doubt in the outcome of the fight, as it went to the judge’s scorecard.
The lightweight champion expressed future plans to fight for a second belt, and double-champ status. He has secured championship wins in his last four bouts, with three separate MMA organisations.

Ingram has long-term ambitions to reach the UFC, and he just needs to continue his run of form in the cage to be joining the professional ranks in the not-too-distant future.
FCC35 took place in Liverpool on Saturday, September 9 with full professional and amateur cards.
At an action-packed event, during which fans were treated to a number of dramatic moments and clinical finishes, a total of six new champions were crowned.
