WORCESTER boxing sensation Owen Cooper maintained his winning professional record at the weekend following his points victory over Robin Zamora at the International Centre in Telford.
Cooper, formerly of Worcester City ABC, ran out the 78-74 winner on referee Chris Dean’s scorecard but failed to put a dent in the uber-tough Zamora.
The 22-year-old has built quite the following in Worcester and the trip to Telford has become a regular occurrence for the welterweight contender’s fanbase, who once more created a terrific experience in the arena.
The former midlands area champion has now made four consecutive appearances at the venue as he continues to step up the level of his opposition.
After his fight, he posted on Instagram, saying: "Firstly, I want to thank everyone that showed up and brought tickets for the fight. As usual, you made yourself heard and I thank you for that. Thanks for all the messages, I will get back to you all.
"Last night (Saturday) we moved to 9-0 and I got eight good learning rounds under my belt against a strong and very game opponent. There was plenty to take from the fight and plenty to work on."
The eight-round welterweight contest kicked off TNT’s live broadcast on the undercard of Liam Davies’ first-round demolition of Jason Cunningham.
Cooper landed the better shots throughout the contest but was also caught regularly by 42-fight veteran Zamora. However, he did enough to come through the fight with a victory and keep his winning record intact.
The BCB promotions managed fighter noted his desire for more domestic titles in the next 12 months.
