Josh Tongue selected for second Ashes Test at Lord's

England has decided to go for an all-seam attack for the match at Lords, with Tongue picked as the fourth seamer.

He comes in in place of former Worcestershire teammate Moeen Ali, who struggled with a burst blister on his right index finger at Edgbaston.

It is the only change made to the side which suffered a narrow two-wicket defeat to Australia in the series opener.

Tongue has been picked over the express pace of Mark Wood, who has not played Test cricket since December.

Seamers Chris Woakes and Matthew Potts were also overlooked.

Also missing out on a place in the starting XI is teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who was called up to the squad on Friday as a replacement for Moeen.

All-rounder Moeen appeared to allay any concerns over his fitness by taking a full part in Monday’s net session, but captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum have chosen to go with four seamers at Lord’s.

As such, England will rely on Joe Root’s part-time off-breaks in their efforts to level the series in London.

Tongue only made his Test debut earlier this month, impressing with a maiden five-wicket haul against Ireland.

Reflecting on his debut, the 25-year-old said: "It was great, a special day, making my debut at Lord’s in a Test match is just an amazing feeling and it is my first game here as well.

"I have never played here before but I have watched cricket.

"There is no better feeling than Jimmy Anderson giving me my cap and all my family here, my son, my girlfriend, it was just a special moment for us.

"He said very nice words, just to be myself, have no worries and go and enjoy it. I felt a bit of nerves, but once I got through that first over, bowling a maiden is quite nice but as soon as I bowled that first ball I got into my work.

"I started my spell quite well, I was quite unlucky with a few near misses but I was happy with what I did."
