Both fly-half Owen Williams and hooker Scott Baldwin (now both playing for Ospreys) are on the bench for Wales, who welcome one of the favourites to the Principality Stadium in Round 1.
Ex-Warriors winger and fan-favourite Josh Adams starts for Gatland's men, who will be hoping for an improved campaign this time around.
Wales only picked up one win last year, against Scotland, and also lost to Italy in Cardiff in the final game of the 2022 edition.
They have since brought back Gatland as head coach, following the sacking of Wayne Pivac in November. Former Worcester head coach and player Jonathan Thomas is also amongst the coaching staff under Gatland.
Wales host Ireland in round 1 before going to Scotland next week. Week 3 is a home clash with arch-rivals England in Cardiff.
Wales conclude their tournament with back-to-back away games in Rome against Italy and a daunting trip to Paris to face France.
