HOLLY Rogers’ 89th minute winner ensured Worcester City Women would be in the hat for the first round proper of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, where they will face Coventry Sphinx at home.
Rogers lobbed the Solihull Sporting keeper to complete the comeback as City recovered from going behind after just 15 minutes to win 2-1.
City’s Sophie Griffiths reacted quickest to a ball in the box to equalise for the hosts before Rogers popped up with time almost up to be the hero.
The draw was then made on Monday and handed City a clash with Coventry at Claines Lane.
After the game, goalscorer Griffiths spoke of her joy at registering on the scoresheet after a long injury lay-off.
“It was amazing,” she said.
“Being out with the injury for so long, to finally get minutes on the pitch and start was good enough but to score the first goal was an amazing experience.
“Great to be back and so happy with the result.”
It was anything but an easy 90 minutes for City and Solihull created a number of chances that could have done for City in the end.
But Griffiths applauded her side’s character and ability to scrape out the winner.
“It was a tough game,” she added.
“We anticipated it was going to be a battle but I don’t think we realised just how tough it was going to be.
“They came at us straight away. We played out football but we needed to step it up in the second-half and I think we did that.
“We had the team talk at half-time and said that we needed to turn it on.
“Everyone put a shift in and we were completely relentless towards the end.
“We wanted that goal, we wanted to win the game, we weren’t going to take no for an answer.”
After losing last week, griffiths admitted it was an important game to win just for morale more than anything.
But now they also have the first-round to look forward to and she is hoping this can be a building block going forward.
“We needed this to boost morale again,” she added.
“After losing last week we needed a response. We trained really hard in the week and made sure we had the right mindset this week.
“Now hopefully we can use this and move forward.”
