WARNDON Villages Girls Under 14s will represent Worcestershire after winning the Tesco Cup final.

But their under 16s could not quite make it a club double as they lost in their showdown with Ferndale.

The two winners go through to the Tesco Cup South West finals at Bath University tomorrow.

The first girls' finals in the competition were hosted by Pershore High School.

Villages Under 14s saw off Cookley 2-1 after the teams beat Newtown Sports and Burlish Olympic respectively in the last-four.

Both teams looked nervous as they tackled the artificial pitch but a failed clearance by Cookley allowed Ellie Gerhold to put the Worcester side ahead within the first minute.

Villages took control of the game with Gerhold having two chances in quick succession to put Warndon further in front.

Cookley's defence worked hard and gradually they got themselves back into the game with Danni Gunn being denied by the keeper five minutes before the break.

But they came out strongly after the break and deserved their equaliser through a well-taken goal from the edge of the penalty area by Gunn. Cookley began to take control but, against the run of play, they went behind again after a great strike from Becky Lewis.

In the closing stages, Cookley fought valiantly for an equaliser but Villages' keeper did well to keep the strikers at bay, denying Hannah Watts.

The second final of the day saw Villages lose 2-0 to Ferndale in the under 16 age category.

Ferndale started brightly with two chances in the first five minutes only for the keeper to save from Shanice James and Rebecca Wright.

Warndon created chances of their own in an even first period with two shots going just wide.

The deadlock was eventually broken mid-way through the first-half with a cross-shot from Wright which crept in at the near post.

Ferndale doubled their lead just two minutes into the second-half with a superb 25-yard strike by Mel Zaffino.

With a two-goal lead, Ferndale relaxed and took control with Zaffino shooting just wide after impressive build-up play.
