DIRECTOR of rugby Mike Ruddock has tipped Tom Wood for international stardom after the young back-rower agreed a new two-year contract extension with the Warriors.

The 21-year-old flanker, who joined the Worcester Academy from Coventry-based side Barkers Butts, has been in eye-catching form this season, making 17 appearances.

Wood, who has ousted Australian veteran Drew Hickey as Warriors' first choice number six this season, has battled back after suffering a broken leg two seasons ago.

Sixways boss Ruddock said: "Tom has made rapid strides and has the physical size to make an international back row forward. He also has the determination to carry him to that goal.

He is another fantastic product of our thriving academy programme and, with Drew Hickey leaving the club at the end of the season, more weight will fall on Tom's broad shoulders. However, we believe this will bring the very best out of him."

The youngster, who spent time playing for North otago in New Zealand as he recovered from his broken leg, said: "I'm delighted to agree a new contract extension at Warriors, I have thoroughly enjoyed this season and being such a big part of the first team squad.

"I know there is more I can add to my game but I feel with the coaching team at Warriors I can continue to develop and improve even more next season as I look to have an even greater impact."
