WORCESTER Amateur Boxing Club fighters were in action at a tournament in Shrewsbury.
There was a good display of skills from all four boxers, most notably super-heavyweight Ashley James.
Topping the bill, James faced Anthony Bloomer, of Telford ABC, in an all-action final bout.
Both exchanged jabs during the first round with James coming out slightly ahead on points.
The pace increased in the second with heavy exchanges and James stuck to his task of double-jabbing and throwing the occasional straight right.
Bloomer was not to be denied and pushed the contest throughout, having his best period during the start of the third.
But James continued to pick up points with the neater boxing and, at the end of a non-stop final round, was awarded the victory on a split decision.
Schoolboy Usman Multani was up against Andy Simons, of Solihull ABC, in his debut bout.
The more experienced Simons started well, displaying good footwork and fast hands.
Multani had good periods where he forced his opponent backwards against the ropes with straight punching combinations. But there were moments in which the Worcester boy was quiet, which cost him dearly as the bout went to Simons on a majority decision.
Lightweight Scott Forward beat Luke Morris, of Telford, in yet another non-stop contest.
Boxing behind a stiff jab, Forward controlled the bout throughout.
His work-rate was constant, although some of his punches landed on the gloves of Morris.
There was no doubt in the crowd when the final bell rang as to who the winner was but, strangely, one judge gave the contest to Morris.
Luckily, the two other judges gave the bout to Forward on a split decision.
Welterweight Shane Smith faced a well-schooled southpaw in Michael Dungey, of Shrewsbury.
Smith found it difficult to get into range without getting caught with Dungey's right hook. Once he did, he scored well with straight rights to both body and head.
With the bout fairly even going into the third, Dungey opened up and banged home some clubbing rights against a game and determined Smith.
With a solid last round, Dungey impressed the judges enough for them to award him a unanimous points win.
