BEWDLEY Town boss Chris Cornes explained how playing on Worcester City’s defensive frailties dominated his pre-match game plan.

Much of that plan was down to capitalising on City’s defensive hesitancy and Dylan Hart’s counter-attack opener was a perfect example of that.

But much of Bewdley’s success on Tuesday was down to their work rate, something Cornes insists every side of his must have.

“I was nervous about the game, thinking we might be on the other end of a wounded animal,” admitted Cornes.

“But the lads carried out the game plan and it was brilliant from them.

“We pin-pointed their (Worcester City’s) weakness at the back and I think that was exposed more than usual and our front three were unreal. But our midfield out-worked them and our back line was solid.

“The first goal settled us and then we had a worldie of a free-kick fly into the top bin and at 2-0 that ruined everything for them and we had something to defend.

“We might not have all the quality but no team will work harder than us and that’s half the battle.”

Their win over rivals City is the third win of the 2022/23 campaign for Bewdley from their opening six games.

Having come in and saved the club from relegation last season, Cornes has transformed the club and that, he says, is down to a simple concept... hard work.

“We are only little Bewdley, lower budget taking players from lower league and picking younger players but we have tried to set a standard,” he added.

“And that standard we have set has increased week by week. It’s just work ethic and if you have that all over the pitch and you get your team working hard for each other then you are half way there.

“Then if you can add that bit of quality in key areas then you have a fighting chance.”
