WORCESTER City fans are being urged to help save the club's ailing supporters trust.

The organisation was formed four years ago to give fans a say in the running of the St George's Lane club.

However, due to a lack of interest and a dwindling number of members, the trust will be closed at the end of next month if volunteers cannot be found to get involved.

The decision was taken at the trust's annual general meeting, attended by just a handful of people, after City's 1-0 defeat to Hucknall Town.

Secretary Nick Bent, one of the City fans who founded the trust, believes it still has a role to play at the club but says people need to act.

He said: "Fans need to speak up now or the Trust is going to go and it's going to be difficult to form one in the future.

"I think it's still viable if people come forward. It needs five or six people to take an active role in running the Trust."

Bent added: "Worcester City FC Supporters Trust was established in 2004 with the major objective of bringing about the accountable, democratic and constructive involvement of supporters in the running and direction of the club.

"Despite us being upbeat at the time of the launch, it is clear that the objectives of the Trust have never captured the imagination of the match-going fans and membership has always been at a low level.

"After much deliberation, the committee running the Trust came to the conclusion that they should draw a line under things and proposed to members that the Trust should be closed.

"The Trust is a legally registered body and must be closed down according to a legal procedure. As part of that, we must give one month's notice of its closure and its de-registration with the Financial Services Authority.

"If any member - or indeed any other supporter - wants to keep the trust going, they must come forward in the next month, after which we will close the trust down.

"Fans should note that the Trust was formed with the assistance of Supporters Direct. Should fans in the future wish to start a trust again, they would not be able to rely on the assistance of Supporters Direct, so the significant legal and administrative challenges of forming a trust would fall on them."
