UNIVERSITY of Worcester's talented footballer Ajmal Ahmed is among the nominations for the prestigious British Asian Sports Awards (BASA).

Ajmal, who won the Disability Sports Personality of the year award in 2007, has played for the England blind team over the last nine years The 27-year-old from Toxteth, Liverpool, also won the North-West Asian sports personality of the year and helped his side qualify for this year's Paralympics in Bejing.

He was handed the captaincy of the team in September following success in the European Championships.

The Liverpool season-ticket holder is currently training full-time for the Olympics, using the university facilities along with two team-mates who are also students there.

Ajmal is nominated in the outstanding achievement award for 2007 in the BASA night at London Hilton Hotel on Saturday, February 16.

There will be plenty of celebrity guests at the awards with past visitors including England footballer Jermain Defoe, cricketer Kevin Pietersen, Sir Trevor Brooking, boxer Amir Khan and squash ace Jahangir Khan.

The event will be viewed by millions of Sony Entertainment Television viewers across the globe.
