THINUS Delport has warned that Worcester Warriors' relegation fears are not over yet, despite picking up their first win of the season.

The Sixways side finally won a Guinness Premiership game when they beat Bristol 25-5 on Saturday to put some breathing space between themselves and basement side Leeds Carnegie.

However, Leeds managed a losing bonus point against London Irish on Sunday and are are still only five points adrift of Worcester.

Recalling Warriors' successful relegation battle last season, ex-South Africa international Delport, who is 33 on Saturday, insists his side cannot rest on their laurels yet.

"We had a nine-point deficit between us and the second-bottom side last year and we were able to turn it around," the former Gloucester player warned. "It depends what Leeds do. The second-bottom position is always going to be the one that's under pressure.

"As soon as we can move away from there or get a reasonable points margin between us and Leeds then we can talk about it but it's too early to say that.

"There is no way our relegation fears are over, it's always going to be in the back of our minds until we really get a big margin.

"Anything can happen. Leeds might turn over a couple of big sides at home, which they probably will.

"I see them winning again this season. It's a tough place to play and with the Six Nations coming up teams will miss a lot of their star players.

"They beat us when we went up there. We made a couple of mistakes and they were a really energetic side that pounced on those mistakes."

Despite his warning, the popular full-back or wing added there was a sense of relief within the squad after being victorious in the league at the 11th time of asking.

He said: "The win has been coming for quite a while, we had a very good game up at Newcastle and were unfortunate not to come away with the result. We were able to consolidate and go forward in the following weeks at Montauban and Bucuresti at home and thankfully we were able to keep that momentum going in to the Bristol game.

"There were a couple of scary moments - when they scored it put the pressure on us but because of the experience we have had in the last three or four weeks we were able to absorb that pressure and put the squeeze on them.

"What we have done previously is we have compounded our mistakes. We would have had one like that and then followed it up with another couple of errors, but now we are able to consolidate.

"What we did well was play in their half and then put them under pressure with some great defence.

"We really frustrated them and didn't let them get their game on - they are a side that thrives on go-forward ball, but we were able to stop them getting that momentum."

The Guinness A' League fixture at Leeds Carnegie will now be played on Monday, February 18.
