WORCESTERSHIRE director of cricket Steve Rhodes is backing Steven Davies to become England's premier wicketkeeper.

The 21-year-old gloveman extended his New Road contract until the end of the 2009 season last night and the former Worcestershire and England wicketkeeper says that Davies can go to the top.

The Kidderminster product was set to go to India with the England Lions squad next week, however, a knee injury has meant that Davies has had to stay behind.

But his injury woe has been eased by securing his Worcestershire future for the next two seasons.

"The key for Steve is to get his batting and keeping on a consistent level," said Rhodes.

"When you get selected for England it is because you have been a very consistent player and that is what Davo is searching for.

"He is a good gloveman - he is a complete wicketkeeper. I have no doubt that he will play for England."

Bromsgrove-born Davies was delighted to sign a new deal at New Road and knows that another good campaign will have him knocking on Peter Moores' door.

"I have no idea if I will get the call in the next 12 months but hopefully it will come soon," said Davies.
