TALENTED lock Justin Clegg believes he is among a group of young guns at Worcester Warriors aiming to follow in the footsteps of the club’s centurions.
Birmingham-born Clegg joined Warriors at under 17 level before rising through the ranks to secure a place in the senior squad.
The 22-year-old, who made his debut against Bristol in the Anglo-Welsh Cup in November 2016, has played just 10 games for Worcester.
But having seen prop Ryan Bower and centre Ryan Mills recently reach the 100 mark and full-back Chris Pennell close in on 250 appearances Clegg said he also wanted show his loyalty to the club he supports.
“We have been very fortunate to have two (century-makers) in recent times in Millsy and Ryan,” Clegg said.
“Shilly (Jamie Shillcock) got his 50th which is a big one as well.
“That’s what we want to see as a club.
“We want to see guys staying and going on to get 50 caps, 100 appearances and so on and really aspire to be like Jonny Arr and Penns.
“That’s something we are really aiming for.
“I think all the young boys at this club love it here, so we look up to Millsy, Penns and Ryan.
“If we get the chance (to get to 100 appearances) that’s something we would definitely love to achieve.”
The re-signing of young England and Warriors flanker Ted Hill was a big statement of the club’s intent according to Clegg.
“That was huge for the club,” Clegg said.
“To re-sign a player of his calibre is fantastic and it can only be a good thing for us.
“It really shows to everyone else what Worcester want to achieve and that we are here to make an impact.”
Clegg was promoted from the academy in 2018 and has now signed a two-year contract extension.
“I am a reasonably local boy and I support Worcester so it is great to go out there and represent the club on the pitch,” Clegg said.
“If I am not (selected) it is great to still be a fan and get close access.
“It’s something that I cherish.”
Director of rugby Alan Solomons added: “Cleggy is an outstanding young lock. He has the size and physique to make it at top level.
“Over and above this, he is a highly intelligent footballer with good skills.
“He is a first-class bloke and a really good team man."
