NUNNERY Wood Colts hosted their first girls' football tournament.

Twenty-six sides, with teams travelling from Weston-super-Mare and Wales, headed to the club's home ground in Battenhall.

The venue hosted more than 90 matches in age groups covering under 10s, 11s, 13s and 15s.

The sun shone and there was a great atmosphere with a high level of football and local success for Nunnery Wood Pythons under 11s.

Two female referees Rebecca Warriner and Eve Pearson were supported by Colts' own team of youth referees.

Girls' vice-chairman Mark Saunders said: "Our first girls' tournament was a massive success.

"Helped by the weather, 26 teams competed in a flowing festival of fantastic football.

"Teams from as far afield as Weston-super-Mare, Stafford and Newbridge in mid-Wales attended.

"All teams played with a smile on their faces which made it an event to remember and a brilliant day."

The teams were split into groups before finals were played with the under 15s a particular highlight after a tense penalty shoot-out which was won 3-2 by Solihull Moors.

Colts continue to look for more girls' players.

They host a Wildcats centre on Tuesdays at Battenhall from 6.30pm for 7.30pm for five to 11 year olds and another on Wednesdays for school years four and five.
