DROITWICH took a huge step towards preserving their Midlands One West status with an “incredible” 15-10 win at high-flying Newbold-on-Avon.

Ruben Staite and James Shewell went over in the first half as Droitwich led 10-7 at the break before James Horrocks scored the decisive try with 15 minutes to go.

Director of rugby Adam Drew said his side arrived at second-placed Newbold seeking a losing bonus point but insisted the victory was “no fluke”.

“I know that we can beat most teams in this league on our day,” he said.

“Saturday was one of those occasions where everyone played well.

“Chris Hooper, Matt Handford and Dan Guest were outstanding in defence and we just clicked in the forwards.

“We are really chuffed but the result was no fluke. We worked hard for it.

“I believe in our side and have done for years. We are just adapting to the pace and intensity of this league.

“We knew we had to win two or three of our final games.

“This one went a bit against the grain as we were aiming for a point so to get four was incredible.”

Eleventh-placed Droitwich, who host Old Halesonians on Saturday, have moved 13 points clear of the bottom three with five games left.

But Drew added: “You can never say never.

“The teams below us have all got to play each other. Two of them are really going to struggle to stay up but we can’t afford to rest on our laurels either.

“We certainly need one more win.”

Dave Serafini scored a hat-trick of tries as Worcester romped to a 45-7 victory at second-from-bottom Longton.

Promising young player Harry Linney was voted man of the match after making a great impact off the bench.

Serafini bagged two interception tries with some dazzling footwork to beat three Longton defenders.

Tom Biggs scored a well-taken interception effort with Will Carroll and Dan Jones also finishing off opportunities.

Eighth-placed Worcester now have Hereford within their sights in the table ahead of Saturday's home game with Sutton Coldfield who are just below them.
