HEREFORD United made their exit from the Johnstone's Paints Trophy after a drab second round tie at Edgar Street tonight.

Yeovil showed more expertise from the penalty spot after the 90 minutes had ended goalless.

The Somerset side scored from four of their five spot-kicks.

Although Luke Webb and Theo Robinson found the net, Trevor Benjamin's kick was saved and Dean Beckwith completely missed the target.

Yeovil fielded the same side as the one which lost 1-0 at Leeds on Saturday.

The Bulls, however, made five changes with Graham Turner handing first starts to goalkeeper Mike Ingham, centre-back John McCombe and striker Simon Johnson.

Johnson was the first to make an impact, forcing a corner inside the first 40 seconds.

From Clint Easton's flag-kick, the ball flicked off Beckwith's head and flew wide.

Ingham fielded a long-range drive from Lloyd Owusu but mostly had few moments of anxiety until the 32nd minute.

Then he had to dive to push Anthony Barry's shot around the post for a corner.

Two minutes later, he comfortably caught a fierce 20-yard drive from Matt Rose.

Hereford, however, had the best chance of the half six minutes before the break.

Johnson threaded a neat pass through to Benjamin but the Powerade League Two player-of-the-month for September, who received his award before the kick-off, blasted the ball wide.

Johnson won a free-kick on the edge of the Yeovil penalty area within 30 seconds of the start of the second period and Easton curled a shot narrowly wide.

Yeovil began to come more into the game for a period and Ingham pulled off a fine low save from Owusu's shot.

Shortly afterwards, the Hereford defence gave themselves a few problems with a short back-pass from Toumani Diagouraga letting in Owusu.

The striker's shot was parried by Ingham but, with the keeper well off his line, it required a fine block from McCombe to prevent Simon Gillett scoring.

After that, Hereford had rather the better of matters and twice went close.

Luke Webb headed a cross from Kris Taylor down and wide on 78 minutes. And then Theo Robinson miscued a shot from Taylor's cross to set up the shoot-out.
