WORCESTER speedster Scarlett Wakeford showed off her piste potential at the English Alpine Skiing Championships in Italy.

Abberley Hall School pupil Wakeford was one of 440 athletes in Bormio and shone on the Stella Alpina run.

She was delighted with a time of 50.56 seconds that placed her 10th overall in the under 10s category.

“My mouth went dry when I was going down!” said the nine-year-old.

“It gets really icy but it feels amazing in the middle when you’re flying down. I think I went fast and I was happy with the race.

“I don’t train, I just ski on holiday. I first started skiing when I was three so I’ve been doing it for a long time.

“I like skiing because it’s magical. You can feel the wind and it’s just really fun. I definitely want to keep skiing in the future.”

Meanwhile, Malvern’s Alice Bond was crowned under 10s parallel slalom champion despite competing with a broken thumb.

The Downs School pupil, nine, suffered the injury in Flaine, France, and admitted the sheer speed she was travelling at gave her a fright.

“In the seeding I got three on the first run and four on the second but that was a good thing in the end because it meant I went on the blue run. I think it’s better,” she said.

“I was so scared going down there. I was worried my opponent would go past me at the finish.

“I managed not to look at what she was doing and kept looking straight to the front.

“I’m amazed to win with a broken thumb. I had a great week in Bormio.”
