IT took 73 years but Rosie Lewis has become the first female boxer to claim victory representing Worcester City Amateur Boxing Club.

At a junior show in Reigate, Surrey, the 15-year-old beat Amy Judge, of Redhill ABC, in a hard-fought contest.

Judge had lost her first contest and was keen put the record straight but Lewis had other ideas.

She claimed the first two rounds with sharp straight punches before tiring in the last which allowed her opponent back in.

Both girls showed determination and skill with a delighted Lewis claiming victory on a split decision.

Also representing Worcester at Reigate were Alfie Butler and Tyler Bryce in skills bouts.

Both lads shared the ring with boys from Redhill and displayed good skills and ringcraft throughout.

The format gives the young boxers experience to showcase their talents without the added pressure of a winner or loser being declared.

Junior Jayden Bryce rounded off a fine trip for the city club by stopping John Harwood in the third round.

He put his opponent under constant pressure and with no signs of slowing down the referee called a halt to proceedings early in the third.

Lewis is one of many females who train at the city gym on Thursdays.
