WORCESTER Wanderers came out on top in a cagey Midlands Four West (South) clash at recently-promoted Woodrush.

The Sixways-based side won the low-scoring encounter 5-3 thanks to Reggie Ohlson's try.

From the kick-off Woodrush enjoyed a sustained period of territorial advantage.

The Wanderers defended stoutly but, were unable to break out of their half. On 20 minutes, Woodrush were awarded a straightforward penalty, which was duly converted by fly-half Steve Smart.

From the restart, Wanderers recovered the ball and pressed forward. A wayward kick out of defence from Woodrush was gathered by 18-year-old Wanderers full-back Phil Shore, who was making his debut.

He elected to run and in beating the on-rushing defence slipped a pass to Jenkinson who kicked a low punt towards the Woodrush line.

A metre from the try-line the ball bounced up into the arms of number eight Reggie Ohlson who dived over to score. Geriant Perkins missed the conversion from the touchline.

The Wanderers started the second-half as they had finished the first but strong Woodrush defence kept them at bay.

The visitors spurned two penalty opportunities as they pressed for the vital second try. Jenkinson fielded a Woodrush kick and took off on a mazy run from half-way only to be dragged down just short of the line. The ball was recycled quickly and David White lunged for the line but was denied a try as he was deemed to have been held up.

Wanderers introduced tighthead prop Jake Mounce on 55 minutes and he had an immediate impact with his direct ball-carrying and aggresive defence.

Woodrush remained dangerous on the break and, with three minutes to go, forced their way to the Wanderers' 22-metre line. They set themselves for a drop-goal attempt, but the Wanderers defence did just enough to distract Smart and his attempt sailed wide of the left-hand post.

From the drop-out, Wanderers regained possession and held onto the ball, Woodrush infringed and conceded a penalty.

Lee Watkins kicked the ball to touch and the final whistle blew to give the away side a 5-3 victory.
