ANDY Preece was convinced Worcester City were destined to lose at Boston United.

City earned a point in remarkable scenes at York Street after scoring twice in four minutes to snatch a 2-2 draw.

But after going 2-0 down to substitute Lee Thompson's 86th-minute header, Preece thought his side would get nothing for their efforts.

The City manager watched as Emeka Nwadike, scorer of City's first, had a second-half strike ruled out for offside and Boston goalkeeper Chris Wright flirt with the goal-line from Craig Wilding's shot.

Patrece Liburd was also denied during the frantic finale when Wright turned his shot against the post.

But Troy Wood popped up with the equaliser in injury-time to leave the City boss jumping for joy on the pitch.

He said: "I just felt it was going to be one of those days when we weren't going to get the result we deserved. We deserved to win the game the way we played. We created a number of good chances which we didn't take. The football we played was as good as I can remember, it was superb passing and movement.

"Emeka's goal was ruled out for offside but everybody tells me it wasn't. Then when Craig Wilding's effort was blocked on the line I started to think it wasn't going to be our day.

"I couldn't believe it when we went 2-0 down with five minutes to go. But we showed great character and got a goal straight back.

"We kept going and Troy Wood came up trumps for us with a great header and then we still had five minutes to win the game."

City's display also won praise from Boston boss Tommy Taylor, who won an FA Cup winners' medal with West Ham in 1975.

Preece said: "Their manager said we deserved to win the game and that we were the second best team they had played this season behind Kettering. To have that from Tommy Taylor was a great fillip.

"It was a great response to the last couple of performances.

"Even though I am delighted I can't help be a little bit disappointed that we haven't won the game.

"It was disappointing to concede the second the way we did but it was an excellent all-round performance."

City are now without game this Saturday after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Tamworth.

They do, however, travel to Bromsgrove Rovers for a reserve team fixture on Wednesday night in which Preece is hoping to give 90 minutes to striker Wood and Nick Colley.

Former Victoria Ground defender Rapinder Gill, suffering with a tight hamstring of late, could also feature in a bid to prove his fitness for the visit of Southport to St George's Lane on October 20.

Preece added: "We could have brought the Hucknall game forward to Saturday but we needed that time to give the lads chance to get fit.

"It gives us a chance to get three training sessions in but after a performance like that you probably do want to get out and play again.

"We are not getting carried away by the performance but it was a good one."
