WORCESTERSHIRE have stepped up their hunt for a new seam attack by putting in two formal approaches.

While the New Road outfit are refusing to speculate on who their targets are, it is believed director of cricket Steve Rhodes has made moves for two bowlers.

Relegated in the LV County Championship, Worcestershire are desperate to improve their bowling resources.

They began informal talks with 2005 England Ashes hero Simon Jones and have signed Gareth Andrew from Somerset.

The priority for Rhodes is seam bowlers but the New Road supremo may now also start looking for a second spinner after Ray Price left the club when he rejected a 12-month contract.

"That is something that Steve may be looking at now," chief executive Mark Newton said.

"But we do need to strengthen our seam attack and we are seeking permission to speak to two separate players.

"How long that will take, I don't know. It all depends on the county.

"Sometimes it can take a matter of hours and sometimes it can take longer."

Newton also said they have received no formal approaches from other counties for any of their playing staff.

With the season finished, the New Road chief executive is hoping that situation does not change.

"We haven't got a very big squad as it is, so there really aren't any players that are surplus to requirements," he said.

"If someone does come in for any of our players, it will depend on who it is as to what our decision will be."
