PHIL Shurmer clinched the Midland Mid-amateur Championship at his home club The Worcestershire.

The Midland Golf Union event was for golfers aged over 40 who play off scratch and it attracted players from 10 counties.

Shurmer scored an excellent round of gross 72 that left him tied with Nigel Chesters, of Hawkstone Park. A sudden death play-off followed and Shurmer grabbed the title by holing out from 18 feet for a dramatic birdie at the first extra hole.

Club captain Phil Dance had a creditable gross 75 which earned him the prize for lowest score in the 45 to 49 age group.

The Worcestershire's promising young golfer Steven Lane triumphed at the Worcestershire Open, hosted by Redditch.

Lane added to his growing collection of prestigious county silverware with gross scores of 73 in the morning and 70 in the afternoon.

The 19-year-old beat the local club professionals as well as his fellow amateurs.

In the process, Lane took the Guy Bigwood Trophy by one shot from Mark Butler, of Sandwell Pines.

He also bagged the Secretaries Bowl for his 72-hole aggregate by adding his 36-hole score from the county championships earlier this year.
