SIXWAYS speedster Marcel Garvey plans to win over the Worcester Warriors fans with a string of performances akin to his man-of-the-match showing against London Wasps.

The former Gloucester wing put in a fantastic performance - both in attack and defence - in the 24-24 thriller and hopes his efforts will convince his critics that he has plenty to offer.

Garvey, who ignited the Wasps game with a superb second-minute score, said: "Sometimes there is a lot of negativity from the fans - we heard negative comments to some players when we played at Bath - and that gets us down a bit, but we want to play well for the fans and then hopefully they'll be more positive to us.

"Hopefully more performances like the one against Wasps will win them over pretty quickly. I enjoyed the game and the important thing was to get some points on the board - now we are off to a start.

"I am playing better than I've ever played in my career and I'm just looking to get my hands on the ball as much as possible. I think I am getting better and I have been learning a lot from Clive Griffiths.

"We have been watching videos of world class wingers and I am looking forward to Rico Gear coming here so I can learn from the best and hopefully move my game in from there."

Warriors director of rugby Mike Ruddock was delighted with Garvey's performance and he said: "We've got to give a lot of credit to Clive Griffiths and Billy McGinty for the work they've done with the backs' skills and Marcel seems to have bought into that.

"I was delighted to see him get his try - it was excellent and he could have had more than one. We are trying to get the ball into his hands and create chances for him - he is very upbeat about the way we are playing. He is starting to get some form and go looking for work - which is what we want - and he is very dangerous in the one-on-ones.

"He defended very well and made a fantastic tackle in the second-half to turn the ball over and we're pleased with that too. Hopefully he'll continue to get better and improve."

However, Garvey, whose career at Worcester has been undermined by a succssion of injuries, is determined to prove he has more to his game than just being a pace-ace on the flanks. He added: "I''ve been working on my core skills and with the back-three as a unit and I want to have more strings to my bow than just being thought of as someone who is quick. I have done a lot of work with Mike and Clive on tackling back and the other aspects of my game.

"People think you are playing well when you score tries, but that's not always the case. At the end of the day, it is down to the work you do around the park as well as scoring tries.

"Last season was disappointing for me because of injuries and then having to fight to try and get back in the team, but this year I have started the season. I have to play each game like it is my last and do as well as I can.

"I have been trying to get my hands on the ball as much as possible and against Wasps that happened very early on and I was pleased with that.

"From a team point of view, it was good for the backs to step their game up this week and I have to give a big mention to Dom Feaunati - he was outstanding when he came on.

"Gavin Quinnell and Ryan Powell helped make a difference too and I think Mike Ruddock made the right subs at the right time and it showed."
